Michelle's Favorites

The Authors that I am reading now - in my classification of Supernatural Fiction

I am now on Goodreads as Michellecupboardmaker.  If you are on Goodreads, you can ask to be my friend and see exactly what I am reading.

We have recently started carrying several of these author's books new because everyone is keeping them and they are not arriving as used books.   I have listed the titles that I have as new books but this may not be perfectly updated)

Hi, As the owner of a used bookstore, people often ask me what I am reading. I read a little bit of everything but my current favorite types of books are genre fiction but they are a combination of several genres. I like the term supernatural fiction for my current reading choices but many of the authors actually call it urban fantasy.
The following is a list of several authors that are my current favorites. This list is in no particular order and when applicable I have included links to the author’s webpages. I will include more accolades when I have the time, but I am supposed to be researching the books for the Internet right now. However, thinking about my current favorites and checking when their latest books are arriving is more interesting.
I created this page because I constantly recommend that my customers buy these authors.  These books are very rarely traded in at my bookstore and I tell people that they should read them. I will be making this page more informative and attractive as I have the time.  Within a few months, I will also be carrying some new books.  These are the authors that I will be carrying because their books are so great.

1. Kelley Armstrong

Her Women of Otherworld Series creates an alternate reality that is close to our own. Her world includes: werewolves, vampires, ghosts, necromancers, witches and half demons. The characters are strong and fascinating and the plots are well-developed. I enjoy the fact that she alternates narrators in the different books but keeps the reader up to date on the actions of the other characters in the series. Her website is http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/

2. Patricia Briggs –

The Mercedes Thompson Series. The main character is a werecoyote raised by werewolves but she interacts with many different types of otherworldly beings. http://www.hurog.com/books.shtml

3. Kim Harrison-

The Hollows Series. The main character is a witch but her roommate is a vampire. The magical beings came out into the world when a plague destroyed a significant portion of the human world.  The characters are both likable and interesting.   http://www.kimharrison.net/

4. Jim Butcher

Harry Dresden. Harry is a wizard who is more of a supernatural private detective. The books have a noir fantasy feel and are set in Chicago of the modern world. However, very few people know that magic, vampires, and shifters are real. http://www.jim-butcher.com/

5. Jeaniene Frost

Night Huntress Series. The first book in the series is very promising. The main character is a half vampire who kills vampires. http://www.jeanienefrost.com/

6. Charlaine Harris -

Sookie Stackhouse Series – Sookie can read people's minds but not vampire's minds which makes her a valuable ally of the vampires. These books combine humor and great characters. http://www.charlaineharris.com/  You can also check out the television show based upon these wonderful books on HBO-True Blood (I got HBO just to watch the show and so far it is worth it.)

7.  Rachel Vincent

This series is about a were-cat, her Pride and her adventures.  The books are compelling and the characters are interesting.   http://www.rachelvincent.com/

8.  Jeri Smith-Ready

Her vampire series focuses on a vampire radio station.  This series is very innovative and interesting.  The second book is coming out in May.  She also writes fantasy novels that are also great.  http://www.jerismithready.com/

9.  Maria V. Snyder

Her books are closer to traditional fantasy than urban fantasy.  The world that she creates is fascinating and her protagonist is amazing.  Usually, I am a little too lazy to learn about different worlds which are part of the fantasy genre but this world is so fully realized that I want to learn more.  There are currently three books in this series.  http://www.mariavsnyder.com/

While urban fantasy which I think of as Supernatural Fiction is my current favorite genre, I also read several mystery authors.  (Since I average 5 books a week, the authors that I enjoy do not publish quickly enough for me)

1. Nancy Atherton – The Aunt Dimity Books - http://www.aunt-dimity.com/

2. Victoria Thompson – These are historical mysteries and the research is wonderful and the author’s sense of place is excellent. http://www.victoriathompson.com/

3. Janet Evanovich – Stephanie Plum Series - http://www.evanovich.com/

4. Nevada Barr – The Anna Pigeon Series - http://www.nevadabarr.com/

5. Margaret Maron – The Deborah Knott Series - http://www.margaretmaron.com/

6.  Toni McGee Causey - The Bobby Faye Series - http://www.tonimcgeecausey.com/
